taking care of your pet after surgery

Why RegionalVet?

After leaving the hospital your pet may need special accommodations to continue to heal and recover at home. At RegionalVet, we want to ensure that you have a comprehensive understanding of how to properly care for your pet during this important phase in the recovery process.

We respect your privacy, and we believe that you and your pet deserve our undivided attention while we explain these home care instructions. For this reason, we schedule a discharge appointment in order to give you ample opportunity to thoroughly review your pet's written discharge instructions, and to ask any questions that arise when you come to take your pet home. During this time, we will also schedule your follow-up surgical progress visit or direct you as to when to follow up with your primary veterinarian.

Once you arrive home, it is very important to follow all of the instructions provided, including restricted activity even if your pet seems ready and eager to run and play. The incision will need to be clean and dry to allow the body to heal so, it is very important that your pet does not lick or chew at the incisions, or sutures. If you are sent home with an Elizabethan collar, be sure to use it, even if it initially seems cumbersome to your pet.

Monitor your pet's appetite, attitude, and energy level. Give all medication as exactly directed, and do not stop any existing, or start any alternative medication without the express permission of your veterinarian. Do not give any over-the-counter human medications as many have the potential to be toxic to pets.

If your pet seems to be in pain, or to be acting abnormally, do not hesitate to call us. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and no concern is too minor. We are here for you and your pet. Our team approach to your pet's lifelong health is what has ensured the success of the hundreds of surgeries conducted each year at our hospital.
