RegionalVet Geriatric Health & WellnessAt RegionalVet, we celebrate aging as the reward for healthy living. Preventive veterinary care, like our Total Health Plan, is proven to add years and quality to the life of your elder pet. Because pets age much more quickly than we do, our Total Health Plan uses geriatric screening to promote early detection and treatment of disease, thus allowing us to begin more effective treatment options before any issues become debilitating. Most pet parents are surprised to know that their pets are considered "senior" by the time they are 7 years old. However, by taking a proactive approach to your pet's health, and considering all specific risk factors for their lifestyle and breed, we can manage the aspects of a healthy aging process for your pet including:
It is for all of these important considerations that it is recommended for senior pets to be seen on a more frequent basis than healthy adult pets. My Pet Seems Healthy, Why is a Senior Wellness Plan So Important? While your pet may seem very healthy for a senior, dogs and cats have an innate ability to disguise illness or pain. This instinct is a prehistoric survival tactic. So by the time they show you their discomfort it has become unbearable to hide. Geriatric testing and careful observation helps us to identify problems early enough to prevent or at least ease discomfort. Remember many factors affect aging as well, such as breed, genetics, nutrition and lifestyle. It's for this reason that we strongly recommend that senior pets are seen for two annual well visits per year. It is our goal, and our honor, to commit to the lifelong health of your best friend. |
